Project: 5 Million Medicinal and fruit Trees grown in Africa by 2030
ALCDI’s mission is to create Food Forests in Uganda and Africa while engaging children, their parents and school teachers in the process of the creation. They will learn life skills and a respect for nature that only hands-on practice offers.
Meet Nkusi Gerald,
An eco-warrior, youth ambassador for climate change and passionate travel guide in Uganda and Rwanda. He's on a mission to transform wasted spaces in his communities and around people's homes and highly degraded forests and ecosystems into food forests.
As Uganda and Africa becomes less food secure, it is essential for local communities and young people to access skills to enable them to understand and practice food production in environmentally friendly ways which do not further damage already depleted soils or endanger other species in the neighbouring local resources.
Food forests produce an abundance of food and supplies while restoring a healthy forest ecosystem.
Together with his team, they are helping communities to design and build natural ecosystems full of life that look after themselves, just like a forest which contains indigenous vegetables, organic foods and trees of their choosing.
Implementing Partners:
Nkunga Eco Village
is a community based grassroot organization developing an alternative model for sustainable living. The Eco Village aims to provide an environmentally healthy, satisfying and socially-rich lifestyle while minimizing ecological impacts. The Eco Village is one of the centers for seed multiplication, propagation and training located in Rwamwanje about 1.5 Kms from the Primate Capital and home to the Chimpanzees of Kibale National park and next to Katonga Forest Reserve.
Home of Kigezi,
A Museum of Living Culture and Natural History is a regional one stop centre for cultural prerservation, education and climate led environmental innovations in the South Western Uganda.
Campaign Goal:
Growing of 5 million trees across Uganda and Africa by 2030 to restore degraded land due to excessive charcoal production and use of artificial fertilizers whilst boosting nutrition and well-being and improving livelihoods using sustainable homestead and community systems for care and protection. This Will be done by Community Food Forest Creators and Ambassadors both in primary, secondary Schools and higher institution levels together with their teachers.
Project Reach:
100,000 children and Adults each planting/caring for 50 trees (40 at home or communities and 10 in their school or vice versa depending on available land space) in the 4 regions reaches the target of 5 million trees. This is completely in line with the UN Declaration of Ecosystem Restoration for 2021-2030 to support tree planting to mitigate climate disasters.
